OVERVIEW
Listed on the Main Board of the Singapore Exchange (SGX-ST), Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd. is a leading business corporation with a diversified portfolio of businesses in Real Estate, Consumer, Automotive & Heavy Equipment, Financial Services and Investments in Myanmar.
BUSINESS CHALLENGE
Yoma SH Ltd is looking for full cloud migration of their own on premise Win servers and be active as full Cloud based operation on AWS. The increasing demand for Yoma’s applications and business across different verticals requires to have a digital transformation journey to disrupt its own operations and a consistent and effective migration to cloud for their on-premises system.
During the process, Yoma partnered with Renova Cloud to migrate their legacy system to AWS. In addition, Yoma aligns its business with advanced technology solutions as part of AWS platform that pave the way of continuous growth.
KEY CHALLENGES
It was a clear requirement by Yoma SH operation team that current production system should not be affected in terms of performance, data lost and downtime. Yoma SH expected to get best practices for safe and quick process to migrate the legacy servers to AWS cloud platform. There is also a requirement that the on-cloud system will be part of the current connectivity environment via VPN connection that is already powered by existing Meraki-Cisco cloud infrastructure.
Cloud-native applications requires a high degree of infrastructure automation and specialized operations skills, which were asked by Renova Cloud be supported along with Yoma IT operation team.
SOLUTION
With long-standing experience in cloud consultation and cloud migration process, Renova Cloud helped Yoma to migrate their system to cloud environment. Renova supported to pair the existing IT investments with secure, scalable solutions and overarching cloud management to create cloud-ready, agile infrastructure environments. The main target was to migrate Yoma SH Windows server to apply best practices across security, governance monitoring, storage, networking, application life cycle management. To achieve this purpose, Renova have used Import/Export service to import virtual machine (VM) images from existing virtualization environment to Amazon EC2 as Amazon Machine Images (AMI), which we can use to launch instances. This enables us to leverage our investments in the VMs that Yoma SH have built to meet their IT security, configuration management, and compliance requirements by bringing them into Amazon EC2.
We have also used CloudEndure service under AWS for the lively migrate large scale on-premises servers to AWS. CloudEndure Migration simplifies, expedites, and reduces the cost of cloud migration by offering a highly automated lift-and-shift solution. CloudEndure Migration continually replicates the source machines into a staging area in your AWS account without causing downtime or impacting performance. When all set up is ready to launch the production machines, CloudEndure Migration automatically converts our machines from their source infrastructure into the AWS infrastructure so they can boot and run natively in AWS.
Here is the overall general Diagram for the servers migration.
Dealing with expectation of joining on-cloud system to existing environment via Meraki cloud network, we also build a Meraki vMX 100 instance on cloud and set up a VPN site-to-site connection between on-cloud migrated system and on-premises other systems. Dealing with monitoring module for on-cloud system, we installed cloudwatch agent on each EC2 instance to collect computing metrics and application logs. By that we can monitor vCPU usage, disk free space, database logs and other important metric of each machines. We also create cloudwatch rules and cloudwatch alarms to detect anomalous behavior in the environment, alert administration team in advance about risky actions to keep Yoma’s applications and servers running smoothly.
As part of the process we have provided a back-up module for every instance using Lifecycle backup policy of AWS. Using Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager helps us to automate the creation, retention, and deletion of snapshots taken to back up your Amazon EBS volumes. In order to backup databases, we created jobs to move backed up file from EC2 instances to S3 bucket and alert administration team every time the uploading is successful to S3. Yoma SH was asking to connect with their other existing resources on AWS and for that we were using VPC peering service to help them connect their applications to each other with low latency network on AWS.
