{"id":14013,"date":"2021-06-04T07:00:47","date_gmt":"2021-06-04T00:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/renovacloud.com\/?p=14013"},"modified":"2021-06-07T10:19:35","modified_gmt":"2021-06-07T03:19:35","slug":"awss-free-tier-scaring-the-crap-out-of-newcomers-with-large-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/renovacloud.com\/en\/awss-free-tier-scaring-the-crap-out-of-newcomers-with-large-bills\/","title":{"rendered":"AWS&#8217;s free tier scaring the crap out of newcomers with large bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent weeks many experts in the AWS community have been advocating for sandbox accounts on AWS adding hard billing limits that cannot be exceeded to let engineers experiment with new services without affecting their personal well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/forrestbrazeal\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forrest Brazeal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of content &amp; community at A Cloud Guru and AWS Serverless Hero, wrote the popular article &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cloudirregular.substack.com\/p\/please-fix-the-aws-free-tier-before?ck_subscriber_id=512830314\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please fix the AWS Free Tier before somebody gets hurt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; that was triggered by a message on the A Cloud Guru Discord server.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forrest Brazeal is not the first AWS expert raising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lastweekinaws.com\/blog\/is-the-aws-free-tier-really-free\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">questions about the Free Tier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoq.com\/news\/2020\/09\/aws-free-tier\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported by InfoQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last September. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/QuinnyPig\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corey Quinn,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cloud economist at The Duckbill Group, reacted to the recent events <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lastweekinaws.com\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It would appear that I&#8217;m not the only person who has lost patience with AWS&#8217;s free <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tier scaring<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the crap out of newcomers with large bills. (&#8230;) It&#8217;s rare that AWS billing is a life-or-death situation; the day that changes is a watershed moment that there&#8217;s no coming back from. If I&#8217;m AWS I&#8217;d be treating this as a raging fire in the building. I hope they are&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14005\" src=\"http:\/\/renovacloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/freetier-FB.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AWS Support documents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/premiumsupport\/knowledge-center\/free-tier-charges\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to avoid incurring charges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when using the AWS Free Tier and has multiple times proved to be supportive and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.andrewray.me\/my-first-aws-free-tier-hosting-bill-was-900\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reimburse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the accidental charges, but there is currently no way to set a hard limit on billing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft offers a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/cost-management-billing\/manage\/spending-limit\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spending limit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> functionality turned on by default to all new customers who sign up for an Azure free account or subscription types that include credits over multiple months.
